Local Attractions

New Bern was settled in 1710 by Swiss and Palatine immigrants. Named after the Swiss capital, Bern is an old Germanic word that means "bear". The bear symbol is featured on New Bern's flag. Throughout the city, you'll see many creative Bear Town Bears, each with a hidden feature to discover. Take the grandkids on a bear hunt, stopping at the soda fountain on Main Street along the way — it's the birthplace of Pepsi-Cola. Locally owned breweries, restaurants and coffee shops also offer opportunities to whet your whistle. To immerse yourself in New Bern's 300-year past, visit the Tryon Palace. Exhibits offer new experiences with each visit and the formal gardens are delightful. Last but not least, stroll the Riverwalk for waterfront views. The sunsets are spectacular.
